A PAIR OF 12-BORE SIDELEVER 'TWELVE-TWENTY' W. BAKER 1913 PATENT ASSISTED-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTORS, serial no. 17064 / 5,
circa 1932, 28in. nitro chopperlump barrels gold-inlaid '1' and '2 at the breech ends, the tubes engraved 'CHARLES LANCASTER 7 BURY STREET. ST. JAMES'S. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/2 choke, wall thicknesses circa 19, slender W. Baker patent assisted-opening actions, patent no.16778 of 22nd March 1913, with Baker patent ejectors, Stephen Grant style fluted fences, removable striker discs, toplevers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, best fine border and acanthus scroll engraving with central floral bouquets, the lockplates signed 'CHARLES LANCASTER,' the undersides gold-inlaid 'CHARLES LANCASTER LONDON' in scrolling banners, the triggerguards gold-inlaid 'THE TWELVE-TWENTY' and with further gold-inlaid '1' and '2' on the triggerguard tangs, retaining some colour-hardening and finish, 15 1/8in. well-figured stocks including 1in. leather covered recoil pads, weight 6lb. 1oz., in their brass-cornered oak and leather case with Stephen Grant 7, Bury Street address trade label and a canvas and leather outer, both case lid and canvas outer initialled 'A.S-B.'


Provenance: Information provided by the vendor suggests that these were the past pair of guns made by Charles Lancaster, started by them and completed by Stephen Grant & Sons after they succeeded to the business (this would tie in with the serial numbers). The initials A.S-B. are attributed to Arthur Smith-Bingham
