Provenance: The vendor has kindly provided us the following information:
"A best gun model named by them "the Victoria" in 1880 when this early model hammerless action, back action, sidelock shotgun was introduced by them. The original model numbered 10,108 was initially ordered by a Mr Oldhusen, who went on to cancel this and it was sold instead to a "Mr Ward". From the Cogswell records the original charge was for a load consisting of 3 drams of No.4 grain black powder, and 1 1/8oz. of lead shot.
The person that I acquired this from many years ago had it reproofed with the London Proof House for black powder charged cartridges. This was a personal choice and would not have been mine, particularly as both bores were / are in good condition!
The capital letters engraved upon the gold escutcheon inset into the highly figured walnut stock of "WE" are those of a William English, a man who had an interest in race horses, so I was told.
I have had a great deal of enjoyment using this gun in shooting game birds over pointing dogs, principally Irish red setters, German wire-haired pointers and German short-haired pointers, and cocker spaniels from time to time."
