A CASED 16-BORE FLINTLOCK SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 7635,
for 1820, with browned twist damascus octagonal to sixteen-sided to round 32in. barrel, the top-flat signed in script 'JOHN MANTON & SON DOVER STREET', applied fore-sight, platinum lines and touch-hole to the trophy engraved colour hardened breech, the underside of barrel with London proofs and the barrel maker's stamp of William Fullerd, border, trophy and scroll engraved top-tang, border and trophy engraved lock signed 'JOHN MANTON & SON PATENT' below the 'V' shaped rainproof pan, reverse 'C' shaped cock, roller frizzen, the front face marked 'Jn. MANTON & SON PATENT', dark walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, engraved iron furniture, the trigger guard bow featuring a martial trophy (cleaned of finish), two white metal escutcheoned barrel-keys and brass mounted mahogany ramrod, in its maker's mahogany casing relined and compartmented in green baize and complete with a monogrammed flask, leather cased cleaning rod, three Sykes patent shot chargers, a lozenge-shaped oil-bottle, turnscrew with pricker and other sundries


Provenance: The lot is accompanied by a typed and handwritten note from Keith Neal stating that the shotgun came from Flixton Hall, Suffolk and was previously the property of Sir Shafte Adair and was purchased from Major Gen. Sir Allen Adair of Flixton. It also retains its original Christies Lot label (154) from the 8 November 1995 W. Keith Neal sale
