A CASED BEST QUALITY .451 PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 575,
for 1861, with browned octagonal damascus 33in. barrel, the front half of top-flat file-cut, dove-tail for fore-sight (a later tunnel sight included but not fitted), elevating ladder rear-sight, the area forwards of the rear-sight marked 'PATENT NO. 156' and 'GAUGE 451', behind the rear-sight 'ALEX'R HENRY 8 SOUTH ST. ANDREW ST. EDINBURGH', colour hardened breech-block engraved with borders and the mask of a tiger, fully border and scroll engraved colour hardened top-tang, border and scroll engraved lock signed 'A. HENRY' below the engraved hammer and with a prowling lion engraved to the bar, sliding safe, chequered walnut pistol-grip half-stock (wrist drilled for a later aperture sight, not present), colour hardened patch-box engraved with an elephant, iron heel-plate (some pitting to both), scroll engraved grip-cap with trap, blued trigger guard bow engraved with a bear, an oval escutcheon to underside of stock engraved with a standing lion above a wreath, much finish and colour throughout and in its maker's leather lined oak case retaining a full complement of accessories and with parchment trade-label inside lid
Provenance: Donald Dallas's work 'Alexander Henry, Rifle Maker', lists this rifle as a Best Single Barrel rifle with Patent use number 156. A photocopy of the page from the record book (included in the lot) appears to show it being made for a Waudsley Esq.
