A .44 PERCUSSION REMINGTON VARIANT NEW MODEL ARMY REVOLVER, serial no. 12228,
circa 1862, with blued octagonal 8in. barrel signed in the old style on the top-flat 'PATENTED DEC 17 1861' over 'MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS ILION N.Y.' (bluing faded but original), conical pillar fore-sight, solid frame (finish faded) with sighting groove to the top-strap, blued cylinder with safety notches, brass trigger guard and smooth flared walnut grips, the left with martial cartouche, inspector's stamps throughout, mostly 'P', 'J' & 'S', strong amount of original finish
Provenance: The variant New Model Army with the old style barrel markings are only found between serial numbers 10000 to 22000. They are also known as 'transitionals' by collectors
