A FINE CASED .461 (GIBBS No.1) GIBBS-FARQUHARSON FALLING-BLOCK BACK-POSITION MATCH RIFLE, serial no. 14159,
circa 1889, with 34 3/4in. blued heavy tapering round barrel, signed 'METFORD PATENT 1406' and 'GEORGE GIBBS 29 CORN STREET BRISTOL', block fore-sight base, no provision for rear-sight, the action and furniture engraved with fine acanthus scrollwork, the right side with 'FARQUHARSON'S PATENT 537' and mounted with a large thumb-operated safe, the left a beaded oval cartouche engraved 'GEORGE GIBBS BRISTOL', chequered walnut pistolgrip stock with moulded horn grip-cap, vacant oval escutcheon to underside of butt, ribbed horn heel-plate, the actual heel inlet with a mount for a back-position vernier sight, in its maker's oak storage case, the interior un-lined, parchment Gibbs trade label inside lid, the tray compartmented and complete with a blue morocco leather boxed set of sights for the rifle, a full length wood clearing rod, ball starter with plunger, turn-screw, cap-tin, oil bottle, various loading apparatus and cleaning sundries, the whole very complete and in fine condition
