Provenance: Tranter 1863 Army revolvers are scarce, with only a few known in both single and double action formats. This particular revolver is discussed and illustrated on pages113-114 of Ron Stewart's publication 'The Firearms Of William Tranter' where it is noted that this is the only revolver of this type so far known without external cylinder locking notches, and is also the highest recorded number so far for this particular model before the numbers enter the range of the 1868 series revolvers
