A RARE 12-BORE PINFIRE BASTIN PATENT SLIDE-FORWARD SHOTGUN, serial no. 6746,
for 1864, with browned damascus 30in. barrels, the rib engraved 'J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', Bastin slide-action system, the underlever of push-forward form and engraved with borders and scrolls, the lever hook with built up end section also scroll engraved, slender carved serpentine pinfire fences, non-rebounding border and scroll engraved back-action locks signed 'PURDEY', the large dolphin hammers with pinfire cartridge extraction apertures, chequered walnut butt-stock, iron furniture, integral fore-end, the sides with chequered walnut fillets


Provenance: This shotgun was purchased by Lord Wharncliffe on June 24th, 1864. It is pictured on page 85 of Donald Dallas's publication 'The British Sporting Gun & Rifle'

Patrick Unsworth notes in his volume 'The Early Purdeys' that Purdey only built 27 guns with a slide forward action and at the time of his writing in 1996, only four were known to be still extant, this being one of them. Donald Dallas puts the number at 34. In 2012, Holts unearthed gun number 6144 and again in 2020 gun number 6523 was discovered, bringing the total known documented survivors now to six
