A .69 PERCUSSION ARSENAL CONVERTED M.T. WICKHAM PATTERN MODEL 1816 RIFLED MUSKET, no visible serial number,
dated for 1831, converted (officially by Hewes & Philip of Newark, New Jersey) from flintlock, with round 42in. barrel, pinched blade fore-sight integral with the front barrel-band, 'L' shaped twin blade rear-sight, bulbous nipple bolster stamped '15' and with 'clean-out' screw, top of breech stamped 'H&P', '15' and '1861' (date of conversion), the lock of flint form with plugged apertures from earlier mechanism and signed 'M.T. WICKHAM' below 'U.S.', the tail marked vertically 'PHILA 1831', walnut full-stock, iron furniture including two main barrel-bands and twin-banded nose-cap, complete with its cup-ended iron ramrod

Provenance: In 1848, when it was discovered that over 700,000 muskets were in stores across America, a decision was made to upgrade some existing flintlock stocks to the percussion system. Over 100,000 pieces were found unworthy and condemned or sold onto the civilian market. Of the remainder, Hewes & Philip were contracted to convert 20,000 pieces out of which 12,000 were also rifled at the same time as per this example
