A GOOD 4-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED UNDER-LEVER HAMMER FOWLING PIECE SIGNED GATES, DERBY, serial no. 1509,
circa 1868, with fine damascus 36in. barrel, the short sighting rib at breech signed 'F. GATES 4 MARKET HEAD, DERBY', broad engraved band at breech, rounded border and scroll engraved swing-underlever action including fully engraved long top-tang and shallow moulded fence, border and scroll engraved colour hardened lock signed 'F. GATES' and with fully scroll engraved hammer body with dolphin engraved head, figured chequered walnut straight hand butt-stock, leather covered rubber pad and chequered walnut fore-end held with a cross key and with moulded horn tips, much finish remaining


Provenance: Gates traded at this address until 1869 when he sold out to Dolson & Rosson. Eventually, the firm became C.S Rosson after Dolson left
