A SCARCE JAPANESE LATE WAR 1944 PATTERN ARMY OFFICER'S SHIN-GUNTO KATANA,
circa 1944/45, with 27 1/2in. blade, traces of hamon, brass habaki, plain oval iron tsuba, iron fuchi and rounded iron kabuto-gane with large lined aperture for a sword knot, cotton-bound rayskin tsuka, in its original dark brown lacquered saya with release buttons at throat and fuchi.
Provenance: This interesting sword is illustrated on page 42 of Richard Fuller & Ron Gregory's book 'Military Swords of Japan 1868-1945'. The vendor noted that the tang is marked and translates as 'Made by Yuto June 1943'. It has not been possible to verify this as the hilt is screwed on in lieu of pegs
