AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE CONFEDERATE .58 PERCUSSION FAYETTEVILLE ARMORY PRODUCED M1855 RIFLE, lock no. J2,
dated for 1862, with round 33in. barrel, bayonet lug near muzzle, block and blade fore-sight, 'L' shaped flip-over back-sight, inspector's marks at breech, solid top-tang with rounded tip, nipple boss with screwed plug, flat 'low hump' lockplate with bevel edge and signed 'FAYETTEVILLE' on the bar, an eagle device above the initials 'C.S.A.' between the 'C' shaped hammer and the nipple boss and dated to the tail, the inside of lock marked 'J 2', walnut full-stock with brass furniture, the heel-plate with 'C.S.A.' mark to top-spur, two barrel-bands, iron swivels and cup-ended iron ramrod


Provenance: This example is a very rare early model dated 1862. To begin production, the Richmond Armory produced the locks for these rifles and in April 1862 shipped 200 of them to Fayetteville. The locks were numbered on the interior and this example is numbered "J 2". Very few of these rare rifle are known in collections today
