AN EXTREMELY FINE 28-BORE PERCUSSION RIFLE SIGNED PATON WITH PERSIAN DAMASCUS BARREL, no visible serial number,
circa 1855, with probably earlier fine etched ribbon damascus, slightly swamped octagonal 33 1/4in. multi-groove rifled barrel, dove-tailed white metal fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with two additional folding leaves all mounted on a carved foot, a gold inlaid arabic seal bordered with a gilt arabesque midway between the rear-sight and breech-block, the latter colour hardened, scroll engraved and with single plain gold band, moulded and fenced snail, fully engraved top-tang, borderline, scroll and gamescene engraved bar-action lock signed 'PATON', dolphin headed hammer, highly figured maple half-stock chequered at the wrist, blued and engraved iron furniture including oblong patchbox engraved with borderlines and scrolls, bolting hare to the trigger guard bow, spur to the lower tang, single set trigger and bun-tipped mahogany ramrod, some marks to wood but generally fine condition throughout
