PAULY FOR PICHERAU, PARIS
A RARE 20-BORE PATENT DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN CONVERTED TO CAPPING BREECH-LOADING, serial no. 19,
circa 1822, probably converted from Paulys patent central-fire system to Picherau's system of 1825, with 27 1/2in. twist steel barrels, gilt decoration around the fore-sight and at the breech-end (some loss to gilding), two stamped 'proof' marks at breech, lift-up breech block with extended top-tang locking into the front of the comb, the action body-sides signed in gilt ovals 'INVENTION PAULY PERFECTIONE' on the left and 'PICHERAU A PARIS' on the right, external cocking pieces in the form of hammers carved with terminals in the form of knight's helmets, the lock mechanism itself concealed within the wood-work of the stock, older replacement walnut half-stock, smooth iron butt-plate and trigger-guard (some shallow pitting) and fitted with swivels for a sling, complete with two brass percussion ignited re-useable cartridge-cases of Picherau type
