A BEHEMOTHIC 4-BORE FIELD'S PATENT FALLING-BLOCK SINGLE-BARRELLED SHOTGUN, serial no. 7856 / 1059,
circa 1880, with browned tapering damascus 40in. barrel, the top signed 'JOHN RIGBY & CO. 72 St. JAMES'S STREET LONDON', the underside marked 'NOT FOR BALL', bead fore-sight, short sighting rib at breech fitted with a flush folding un-notched leaf rear-sight with central platinum line, substantial bronze slab-sided action with borderline engraving around the receiver bridge and top-tang, border engraving to the slab sides, the corners with fine scroll engraving, the left side further marked 'FIELDS PATENT' over 'No. 1927' over '1877', the right side with moulded iron cocking lever and swinging safe, central exposed hammer and moulded iron dropping breech, chequered walnut pistol-grip butt-stock with Silver's style hard rubber recoil pad, moulded iron cap to the pistol-grip, substantial chequered walnut splinter fore-end, the action with traces of possible silver plating
