JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS, SHEFFIELD
A RARE POCKET-KNIFE, WIRE-CUTTER AND CAN-OPENER COMBINATION TOOL,
late Victorian, with folding 2 3/4in. blade signed 'JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS' on the left side and 'No.6 NORFOLK ST. SHEFFIELD ENGLAND' at the forte, the reverse with a star and Maltese cross stamp, the can-opener with 'RODGERS CUTLERS TO HER MAJESTY' and the same star and cross mark, wire cutters mounted at nose (slight chip at nose of jaws) with exposed handle alongside the knife body, the scales of nickel with one marked 'RD354051' and two part stirrup handle-retainer and lanyard loop to rear

Provenance: These combination tools were a popular private purchase by soldiers in the Boer War and both successive World Wars. Indeed, when the call went out for a clandestine operations knife for use by the Special Operations Executive (S.O.E.), the design was based on this knife but with the addition of folding saw blades
