AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE ORDNANCE 'ELCHO' SAW-BACK BAYONET FOR THE MARTINI-HENRY SERVICE RIFLE, circa 1872, with elongated leaf-shaped spear-point 19 3/4 in. blade, fullered for two-thirds of its length on both sides, saw-backed for half its length, stamped on the ricasso with a Broad Arrow over 'WD' above an Enfield #27 inspection mark with Victorian crown and 'VR' over, cross-guard stamped '8/84', chequered pressed composite leather grips, bird's head pommel, worn, blade cleaned bright with blinded pitting and shallow bending towards the tip, grips grazed with some small losses; one of some 1,700 made, in 1920, Weedon Army Stores stated a total of 1003 Elcho bayonets held, with 117 in 'serviceable' condition and a further 886 in 'doubtful' condition, of which this is probably one of the latter; a rare survivor.
