A JOHN DICKSON & SON 12-BORE ROTARY-UNDERLEVER DOUBLE-BARRELLED PINFIRE HAMMERGUN, serial no. 2280, for 1862, 29in. black powder only English Damascus Twist barrels, the rib engraved 'JOHN DICKSON & SON. 63. PRINCES STREET. EDINBURGH', the pinfire apertures with sunburst engraved detailing, Jones patent rotary underlever, slender standing breech with carved serpentine pinfire fences, non-rebounding back-action locks with large scale dolphin hammers, the action flat signed 'Joseph Brazier', bold acanthus scroll engraving with ornate scrolled bordering, retaining very slight traces of colour-hardening, 14 1/4in. figured stock including steel buttplate, (crack to left overhorn and minor losses around lockplates), fore-end with crosspin release, weight 7lb. 1oz., in a leather two tiered case (some damage) with lift out oak tray fitted for the gun, the lower tier blocked for cartridges
Provenance: A letter from the makers, dated 23rd March 1971, confirms that the gun was completed on the 29th September 1862 as a '12-bore double-barrelled breech loading gun'.
The letter states 'The gun apparently was made to the order of the Marquis of Beaumont but the name has been deleted from our records which would indicate that something happened whereby he did not take deliver of the gun and we have no record of who eventually purchased it'
