A RARE 5-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED FOWLING PIECE, serial no. 8881, in a later case,
the gun manufactured in 1842, with round laminated 51in. barrel, bead fore-sight, short carved flat sighting rip signed 'W. & J. RIGBY, DUBLIN' running onto the barrel and terminating in a panel of scrolls, moulded snail with screwed plug, border and acanthus scroll engraved long top-tang with carved and raised shallow sighting groove, border, scroll and gamescene engraved back-action lock with moustache extension below the snail, the top edge of lock signed in script 'W. & J. RIGBY' (pitted), strikingly figured hardwood half-stock chequered at the swan-necked wrist, iron furniture (pitted) and brass mounted mahogany ramrod, weight approximately 24lb., in a later walnut case lined and compartmented for this shotgun in red baize

Provenance: 'Great Irish Gunmakers - Messr's Rigby' by D.H.L. Back lists this shotgun as a '5-Bore Duck Gun with 51in. barrel' and made for a 'Mr J. Power O'Shee' at a cost of £21.0.0. A cursory glance through the records would appear to indicate that between the years 1821-1859, less than 40 guns of 6-bore or larger were produced, including cannon and stanchion guns
