A JAPANESE ARMY WORLD WAR TWO 1922 PROVISIONAL STANDARD THIRD VARIANT / TYPE 90 HELMET,
steel shell with five-pointed star to the front, 3-point suspension system, heavily worn canvas liner separated from the suspension rings, shallow impact dent to crown
Provenance: This helmet appears to have features of both the Provisional Standard and Type 90 helmets. During the early 1930s, after the Type 90 had been adopted, the 1922 Provisional Standard continued to be manufactured as the production of the Type 90 was initially insufficient to meet demand. The Provisional Standard helmets of this period were the third (and final) variant of the 1922 design and incorporated features from the Type 90, such as the 3-point suspension system (rather than the 4-point of the earlier M1922). The Third Variant was also produced with a canvas liner in addition to the more usual leather
