circa 1848, with heavyweight browned damascus 31 3/8in. barrels, the top-rib signed 'J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON', fine scroll and engraved bands at breech, platinum line and engraved and vented plugs, fully scroll engraved top-tang, border and fine scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'PURDEY' forwards of the hammers (traces of colour), the scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammers notched at base to engaged an 'S' shaped hinged safety device marked 'SAFETY' with the wording 'PATENT' around the base of hinge, chequered walnut half-stock with blued and scroll engraved furniture including the face of the heel-plate, engraved grip safety to the lower tang marked 'PATENT' and brass-mounted ebony ramrod with single 'doughnut' thimble
