A 20-BORE TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 8840,
for 1893, 28in. black powder only damascus barrels, engine-turned matt rib, engraved 'W. RICHARDS. 27. OLD HALL ST. LIVERPOOL.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke, treble-grip action, carved percussion fences, bar-action locks with rebounding hammers, border and acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, retaining very slight traces of colour-hardening in sheltered areas, 14 1/2in. semi-pistolgrip stock including 5/8in. horn buttplate, fore-end with Deeley & Edge release catch, weight 6lb. 1oz.
Provenance: this lot is accompanied with a letter providing the following information:
the makers records show gun no. 8840 was built in 1893 for Mr Ball for £8. 0s 6d. In the sales book from Liverpool it reads:
Solid Bar Top Lever 20-28inch. 2 1/4 drms schultze 7/8oz. No.6.

in the workshop book it reads:
Solid bar top lever 20/28 damascus, full choke, flat engine turned rib, 1/2 pistol hand. 1 3/8" comb, 1 3/4" heel, 14 1/2in. pull. 6lbs. Strong breech-ends. Ordinary 2 1/2" cases. To match 8698. (This was a 3" gun built for the same chap three years earlier as a wildfowl / pigeon gun.)
