Product Details

A RARE VICTORIAN COACHMAN'S MULTI-TOOL BY CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON & SON,
1880s, antler grip scales, main blade with the Johnson 'C J in flag' trademark and '...SON & Co.' under (remaining script rubbed out), tools include two blades, saw, corkscrew, leather spike, awl and hand-guard, staining and some blinded pitting

Provenance: Christopher Johnson established his cutlery business in Sheffield in 1836 with the '& Co.' being added when he took on a partner, John Marshall, in 1868. The firm was renowned for its high quality products and increasingly sought business in overseas colonial markets, winning gold medals at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880 and Kimberley Exhibition in 1892. After WWII, the decline in these markets hit the business hard and the factory was closed in 1956
