Product Details

HAWKINS, LONDON
A 20-BORE BRASS-BARRELLED FLINTLOCK PISTOL,
second quarter of the 18th century, with 8 1/4in. three-stage barrel with slightly flared muzzle and signed 'HAWKINS LONDON' on the breech section, grooved border and foliate engraved iron tang, rounded border engraved brass lock (top-jaw and screw replaced) signed 'HAWKINS', walnut full stock (fore-end chipped and cracked, butt cracked through and repaired) carved in low relief with a shell and raised apron around the barrel-tang, brass mounts including spurred pommel with portrait mask cap and pierced rococo side-plate (tail repaired, trigger-guard tang and one spur of pommel cracked through along the break line on the butt), and later brass-tipped ramrod, London proof marks, maker's mark of John Hawkins.

Other Notes: The maker's mark appears to be that of John (2) Hawkins but may have been used by his son John (4) Hawkins. A similar pistol in the West Point Museum that belonged to George Washington is credited to a George Hawkins of London. Blackmore does not record a George Hawkins so it is possible that this pistol was by either the junior or senior John Hawkins.
