30in. Whitworth-steel nitro chopperlump barrels, the ribs engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/4 choke, self-opening actions with removable striker discs, toplevers engraved '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, cocking-indicators, best fine bouquet and scroll engraving, brushed bright, 15 1/2in. figured stocks including 7/8in. extensions, weight 6lb. 11oz. (No.1) 6lb. 12oz., in their brass-cornered oak and leather case with some accessories

Provenance: This pair of shotguns were completed in 1924 for Major, The Hon. Richard Hanning Philipps M.B.E., J.P., possibly on the occasion of his 21st birthday.

He was born February 1904, second son to Laurence Richard Philipps, 1st Baron Milford whose family seat was Picton Castle in Pembrokeshire, and Ethel Georgina Speke. He shared his father's philanthropical nature and was also a successful industrialist with several streams to the family business, including shipping. He acted as Lord Lieutenant of Pembrokeshire from 1958 - 1974 and was then created the 1st Lord Lieutenant of the newly formed county of Dyfed.
