Other Notes: Phil Coggan was born in Fochriw, Wales in 1948. He didn't enter the engraving world in the traditional manner and spent his early post-school years playing guitar for a rock band and then earnt his living as a painter. He possessed a keen interest in flintlocks and began building his own as a hobby. There were no books available on engraving of that period, and so he taught himself with startlingly impressive results, and was to become a full-time engraver in 1985. His work shows several influences in addition to his own thinking, and his time spent at Cesare Giovanelli's engraving school in Gardonne bears this out. His fine work is amongst the most respected and sought after.
