** WEBLEY & SCOTT, BIRMINGHAM
A RARE .22 UNDER-LEVER AIR-RIFLE, MODEL 'MK 3 FIRST SERIES', serial no. 1532,
for the first year of production 1947, with blued 18 1/2in. tapering barrel, block and blade fore-sight with no provision for protector, elevating rear-sight, early type conical loading tap, plain air-chamber marked 'THE WEBLEY MK 3, WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD, BIRMINGHAM, MADE IN ENGLAND', trigger block with rare 'double-pull' mechanism (working), semi saw-grip walnut half-stock with seventeen groove fore-end (hairline crack forwards of trigger-guard), white plastic 'Webley' medallion inlaid to right hand side of butt and blued streamlined under-lever with close fitting cocking link, fair amount of original finish remaining.
Other Notes: Despite the Webley MK 3 air-rifle going on to enjoy huge popularity and a long production run, the early model was full of teething troubles and prone to breakage. The conical body of the loading tap wore and resulted in misalignment and the special double-pull trigger was exceptionally fragile. Working examples are practically unheard of today and most collectors stand by the statement 'If you have a working example, don't use it'. Only around 2500 rifles were produced with the features of the rifle presented here.
