A SCARCE 80-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-SHOT 'PENNSYLVANIAN' RIFLE, no visible serial number,
circa 1840, with heavy 39 3/4in. octagonal barrel, dove-tailed silver blade fore-sight, standing dove-tailed notch rear-sight, solid plain top-tang, drum and nipple breech, flat, slightly curved scroll-stamped lockplate signed 'H. E. LEMAN, LANCASTER PA.', maple 'Roman nose' full-stock with artificial 'striped' grain, brass oval patch-box with fancy hinge, brass crescent heel-plate with toe and heel extensions, brass trigger-guard with finger and grip spurs, brass fore-end plate and ramrod thimbles, brass nose-cap, replacement ramrod, the exterior iron surfaces darkly stained, some shrinkage cracks to wood around top-tang and brass side-plate
Provenance: Henry E. Leman was a prolific producer of arms in Lancaster Pennsylvania between 1834 and 1887. Despite huge output, very few of his arms, characterised by their stocks with 'enhanced' grain, have survived in collections.
