Product Details

A BRASS-CORNERED LEATHER CARTRIDGE MAGAZINE,
relined with blue velvet, refitted as an attache case, the interior lid with a 'JAMES PURDEY & SONS' trade label, the exterior lid impressed 'EARL DE GREY.'

Provenance: Frederick Robinson, 2nd Marquess of Ripon, G.C.V.O. was born 29th January 1852 and was the only son of George Robinson, the 1st Marquess. He was styled Earl de Grey between 1870 and 1909.

Ripon was a Liberal politician and held the seat of Ripon from 1874 until 1880. He also acted as Treasurer to Alexandra of Denmark, Queen Consort of the United Kingdom. However, he is also noted as a prominant socialite and perhaps the greatest sporting shot of his generation. He normally took to the shooting field with a pair of Purdey hammerguns and his performances are legion.

He married Lady Constance Gladys, widow of the 4th Earl of Lonsdale in 1885. She died without issue October 1917 and when Ripon followed her in 1921 the family titles became extinct.

Literature: Earl de Grey and other great shots of his generation are the subject of a book by Jonathan Ruffer entitled 'The Big Shots', a study of the great driven shooting parties of the Edwardian era.
