NORFOLK', and gold-inlaid '1' and '2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke, bore measurements marginal and wall thicknesses below recommended minimum, treble-grip actions with left-opening toplevers, gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties, Scott patent gas check system, patent no. 617 of 1882, incorporating Southgate patent ejectors, patent no. 8239 of 24th April 1893, use numbers, 1208 and 1209, best bold acanthus scroll engraving, brushed finish overall, No.2 fore-end wood with light damage, 15 1/4in. figured stocks including 1in. rubber recoil pads, weight 6lb. 12oz., in their brass-cornered oak and leather case
Provenance: Research into the crest on the stock escutcheons would indicate that this pair of shotguns was built for a member of the Upshaw family. The crest is accompanied by the family motto 'Praestat Opes Sapientia' which translates as 'Wisdom Surpasses Wealth'.
