Provenance: The maker's records show that this shotgun was completed in 1891 and sold to a Colonel Lumsden for the sum of £17.07.06.

Independant research has established that the gentleman was probably Lt.-Col. Dugald Lumsden, C.B. of the Assam Valley Light Horse, who had tea-planting interests in the area outside his army career.

At the outbreak of the Second Boer War he raised the Indian Mounted Infantry Corps, known as Lumsden's Horse, from volunteers in several existing Indian regiments. He also contributed a deal of his own money into raising the new corps. They left Calcutta, numbering 250 men, in 1900 and took part in several battles of the war under the command of Field Marshall Lord Roberts, including the march to Bloemfontein and the eventual pursuit of de Wet.

Lord Curzon, the Viceroy and Governor General of India placed a memorial stone in St. Paul's Cathedral, Calcutta to commemorate those who had lost their lives during the campaign.
