30in. replacement nitro chopperlump barrels (by the makers, barrel serial numbers 7958 and 7400), No. 2 reproved in 2008, No.1 rib inscription indistinct, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/4 choke, No.2 rib engraved 'BOSS & CO. 13. DOVER STREET. PICCADILLY. LONDON. W.', 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 3/4 choke, left wall at 18-, sidelever actions, automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, incorporating Henry Holland and John Robertson improved patent ejectors, patent no. 16691 of 16th November 1888, fine acanthus scroll engraving with ornate bordering, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, 14 3/8in. cast on highly-figured replacement stocks with matching fore-end wood (No.2), fore-ends with finely engraved grip-catch release levers, weight 6lb. 14oz. (No.1) and 6lb. 8oz. (No.2), in their brass-cornered oak and leather case with some modern accessories

Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this pair of shotguns were ordered October 1889 with damascus barrels (length not recorded) by Lord C.C. Bentinck at a cost of 115 guineas.

Research has not been able to establish which member of the family this pair were built for. However, it was certainly one of the Cavendish-Bentincks whose family seat was Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire.
