29in. sleeved nitro barrels, retaining original rib engraved 'BOSS & CO. 73 ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON.' (engraving refreshed), 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 3/4 choke, Boss improved patent single-trigger, patent no. 22894 of 26th November 1894, automatic safety, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, best fine bouquet and scroll engraving, brushed bright and blued finish, 14 1/2in. figured stock, the comb dropped at the butt, weight 6lb. 12oz., in its makers brass-cornered oak and leather case, the lid exterior impressed 'CAPT. V.R. HINE HAYCOCK'

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was ordered by Captain Hine-Haycock in 1901. This lot is accompanied with a framed copy of the ledger entry from the makers.

Vaughan Randolph Hine-Haycock was born 30th October, 1871. In 1891 he played for Royal Military Academy Woolwich in a cricket match against Sandhurst. He caught out G.L. Paget for a duck and scored 6 runs in the match, which took place June 26th and 27th, 1891.

He entered the Royal Artillery on the 20th November 1891, becoming Captain just 9 years later. He served in the South African War, 1899 to 1901, taking part in operations in the Orange Free State, February to May 1900, including the action at Zand River.

In 1901 he was mentioned in Despatches, received the Queen's Medal with five clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order: "Vaughan Randolph Hine-Haycock, Captain, Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". The Insignia were presented by the King 29 October 1901. Captain Hine-Haycock retired 23 March, 1907, and became Deputy Assistant Director of Remounts in 1910. He served in the First World War, 1914-18.

In 1902 Vaughan married Grace Mary, daughter of Major General Charles Vaughan Arbuckle. He died in 1937.
