ONE WEEK'S FISHING RIGHTS FOR ONE ROD 'ARDOE AND MURTLE' BEAT ON THE RIVER DEE (WEEK SIX OF THE SEASON)
Situated just three and a half miles outside Aberdeen, this fishery consists of about 1.5 miles of double bank, and contains 15 named pools, many of which are very long and can comfortably accommodate more than one angler. With salmon running throughout the season, and sea trout and finnock joining them from April onwards, this could be deemed a fly fisher's paradise!
The Ardoe and Murtle beats are on the Lower Dee where most of the fish caught are fresh and sea-liced. They are renowned for an excellent Autumn run, and when the Spring fishing returns to its former glory, both the Ardoe and Murtle should be amongst the first beats to benefit. The record Dee fish of 56lbs was caught on Ardoe water by the ghillie in the Autumn of 1886.
In the recent past little fishing has taken place in spring and summer, and only light fishing throughout the year, so catch statistics are not truly representative of the potential catches. Night sea trout fishing can be good in May to July.
Ardoe has a total of 7 pools and Murtle has 8. Most pools are readily fished from the bank, the remainder fished by waders in safe conditions. Many of the individual pools are very long, and on several of them more than one rod can comfortably fish a pool. Some pools fish best in high water and some in low water, offering prime fishing in most water conditions.
Located in the heart of the Beat, there is a splendid Scandinavian-style day chalet with its own private car park. The chalet provides you with all the facilities you will need to make your day's fishing complete; with wc, wader room and secure rod racks available. You can either prepare your own lunch in the kitchen, or select from the extensive menu of freshly prepared produce at Ardoe House.
As well as the chalet, there is a delightful traditional Scottish fishing bothy located on the opposite bank to provide you with shelter should you require it.
You will also have the services of a full-time ghillie, whose knowledge of the beat is second to none.
The fishings are managed by Salar Management Services Ltd., Nairn and the maintenance charge for 2013 was £200. This included all expenses, wages and river board levy. Transfer of ownership would have to be done by a Scottish solicitor at an approx. cost of £250.
