Provenance: Research shows that 'Hon.ble D.J. Monson' was Debonnaire John Monson, 8th Baron Monson C.V.O. (1830 - 1900). He was the son of William John Monson, 6th Baron Monson and Eliza Larken.
Debonnaire John Monson served as Captain in the 52nd (Oxfordshire) Regiment of Foot, and fought in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 where he participated in the recapture of Delhi and was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal with Delhi Clasp.
He married Augusta Louisa Caroline Ellis, Lady in Waiting to the Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha on 25th December 1861.
From 1870 he was Club Manager at The Hurlingham Club. Thanks to the initiative of one of the Club's first Trustees, Lord De L'Isle and Capt. Monson the game of Polo was introduced. It was under his direct supervision that the game saw such a successful birth at Hurlingham.
He served as Sergeant-at-Arms to H.M. Queen Victoria's Household from 1871 to 1898, and Equerry, Comptroller and Treasurer of the household of H.R.H. the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Duke of Edinburgh), and was awarded C.V.O. on the 25th May 1896. He died in Florence, Italy on the 18th June 1900, and was succeeded by his son Augustus John Debonnaire Monson, 9th Baron Monson who was Attaché, Paris Embassy 1897-1900; Comptroller of the Household and Equerry to the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1901; Commissioner, British Red Cross and Order of St John in Italy 1915-18.
