30in. nitro chopperlump barrels (No.1 original black powder proof, No.2 nitro reproved in 1972), broad ribs engraved 'JOHN RIGBY & CO. 72. ST. JAMES'S ST. LONDON.' in gothic script, the breech ends with bold scroll engraving and gold-inlaid '1' and '2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 choke in all, treble-grip actions incorporating J. Rigby and T. Bissell patent rising third bite, patent no. 1141 of 1879, use numbers 675 and 676, carved leaf fences, slender toplevers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, dipped-edge lockplates, best bold border and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining traces of original colour-hardening and finish, 14in. stocks including buttplates, fore-ends with grip-catch release levers and ejector / non-ejector selector nuts, weight 6lb. 7oz., in their re-lined brass-cornered oak and leather case with gold-tooled trade label and some accessories
Provenance: This Lot is being sold by Peter Hill-Wood, former chairman of Arsenal Football Club.
Born in 1936, Peter is the third generation of his family to have served as chairman, following his father, Denis Hill-Wood, and his grandfather, Sir Samuel Hill-Wood. The Hill-Woods spent almost a century, 71 years, in the boardroom of one of the most successful clubs in English football, with Peter spending half a century on the board, and 31 years as chairman from 1982 to 2013.
