Product Details

W. & J. RIGBY
A 12-BORE ROTARY-UNDERLEVER SINGLE-BITE DOUBLE-BARRELLED PINFIRE HAMMERGUN, serial no. 11085,
30in. fine etched damascus barrels marked with the Rigby trade mark, rib engraved in gothic script 'W. & J. Rigby, Dublin', the breech ends with a feathered border and starburst detailing around the pinfire apertures, narrow carved fences, hump-backed non-rebounding back-action locks with faceted hammers of pinfire form, the action flats signed 'A. ELVINS', the action, lockplates, hammers and furniture deeply carved with bold acanthus scrollwork, retaining very slight traces of original colour-hardening, 14 3/8in. boldly-figured stock including steel buttplate with elongated back strap, engraved with a pointer surrounded by bold feathered and acanthus scrollwork

Other Notes: Amos Elvins is listed as a barrel maker at several London addresses between 1864 and 1867 and in 1867 he obtained a provisional patent for an extractor and barrel locking mechanism (patent no. 1670 of June 7th 1867). This particular gun does demonstrate a close similarity with the single bite cylindrical bolt locking mechanism detailed in the patent although the serial number places the gun as being completed in the early 1860's
