30in. nitro chopperlump barrels with matt rib, the tubes engraved 'JAMES WOODWARD & SONS. 64. ST JAMES'S STREET. LONDON. S.W. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL.', 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. 1/2 and full choke, 44mm treble-grip action with hidden third bite, arcaded fences, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, articulated front trigger, best fine bouquet and scroll engraving, retaining much original colour-hardening and finish, 16in. highly-figured replacement stock including 2in. wooden extension, weight 7lb. 12oz., in a brass-cornered leather case
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in August 1922, for a Mr B. Reath Riggs.
Further research would indicate B. Reath Riggs to be Benjamin Reath Riggs.
Born in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., and educated at Princeton in the class of '93, he served in the Diplomatic Service of the United States of America, as 2nd Secretary to the Ambassador of Spain in 1923, and Charge d'Affaires of the United States of America in Canada in the 1930's.
