25 1/2in. Whitworth-steel nitro reproved chopperlump barrels (rebored to .300 H&H Mag. from .246 Purdey by J. Roberts & Son in 1977), broad matt sight rib with open sights and two folding leaf sights, white metal inlaid sight lines and marked for 200 and 300 yards, ramp-mounted bead fore-sight with protecting hood, sunken rib engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL', the tubes engraved 'CALIBER .300 H&H MAGNUM. REGULATED FOR 180 GRAIN BULLET', treble-grip action with short side-bolsters and side-clips, removable striker discs, toplever mounted with a folding peepsight, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail and locking lever with gold-inlaid 'BOLTED' detail, cocking-indicators, fine bouquet and scroll engraving, retaining traces of colour-hardening and finish, 14 5/8in. figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, engraved steel pistolgrip-cap, sling eyes, gold oval escutcheon engraved with the emblem of the State of Nawanganar, weight 9lb., in its brass-cornered oak and leather case with some accessories
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the rifle was completed in 1924 as a hammerless ejector for H.H. the Salib of Nawanganar.
Colonel H.H. Sir Shri Sri Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji II, Jam Saheb of Nawanganar, GCSI, GBE (born 10th September 1872 and died 2nd April 1933) ruled the princely state of Nawanganar from 1907 to 1933.
Affectionately known as Ranji, he is best known for his achievements on the cricketing field. A noted Test cricketer, he played for Cambridge University, country cricket for Sussex and also the English cricket team. He is still regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time.
Following his death, in 1934 the Board of Control for Cricket in India started the Ranji Trophy in his memory, the trophy being donated by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. It remains a first class domestic cricket championship to this day, played between city and state sides in India.
During his time as ruler of Nawanganar, he held the position as Chancellor of the Indian Chamber of Princes and also represented India at the League of Nations
