J. BLISSETT, LONDON
A PAIR OF 28-BORE PERCUSSION RIFLED BELT-PISTOLS WITH EXHIBITION BUTTS, no visible serial numbers,
circa 1840, with octagonal iron turn-off 4 3/4in. barrels signed on the top-flats 'J. BLISSETT 322 HIGH HOLBORN LONDON' (darkly stained, bruised), silver fore-sight beads, engraved bands at muzzles, squared brass boxlock side-hammer actions with radiused edges and scroll engraving, the top-plates with standing notch rear-sights, walnut butts profusely inlaid with white-metal vines and leaves (losses), large cornucopia to the heels, engraved white-metal butt-caps with central trapdoors, concealed folding triggers and London proofs; together with their makers brass bound mahogany case, the lid outer with flush fitting brass handle, the mount of which is engraved 'CAPT J. GALLWEY, 16TH REGT.', possible replacement parchment label to inside of lid, the lower tray lined and compartmented in blue baize and containing a number of period accessories including an earlier three-way flask
Provenance: John Gallwey joined the 16th (or Bedfordshire) Regiment as a Lieutenant on 27th July 1802. He was promoted Captain on 28th November 1805. After fighting throughout the Napoleonic wars, he retired on half pay on the 22nd July 1819.
