circa 1860, with browned twist-iron three groove rifled octagonal 27in. barrel, polished and radiused muzzle with scroll engraving around the tunnel fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with two additional folding leaves, the top flat behind rear-sight signed 'J.W. EDGE MANCHESTER', scroll engraved breech end and standing breech, engraved colour-hardened bolt drum and chequered butter-knife handle, colour-hardened border and scroll engraved open iron action, external hammer, blued scroll engraved top-tang with sliding safe, chequered walnut straight hand butt-stock, blued smooth iron heel-plate with scroll engraved top-spur and border engraved oval trapdoor containing a spare needle and pull-through weight, no provision for fore-end, the whole in a remarkable state of preservation retaining virtually full colour and finish except to the heel of the heel-plate
