AN EARLY PATTERN 12-BORE ROTARY-UNDERLEVER PINFIRE DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 6071,
30in. black powder only bold damascus barrels, the rib engraved 'J. PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', and '2' at the breech end, rotary-underlever with single-bite grip, slim standing breech with carved serpentine fences, elongated top strap, back-action locks with dolphin hammers (one a replacement), fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, the lockplates signed 'PURDEY', the action flats with 'No. 2', 14 1/2in. well-figured stock with steel buttplate, fore-end with cross-bolt fastener, weight 6lb. 11oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in 1861 for Mr. G. Payne as No.2 of a pair.
In L. Patrick Unsworth's 'The Early Purdey's' the gun is listed as having been built with 30in. barrels and was sold as No.2 of pair of guns at a cost of £115.10. 0 the pair
