* A .75 FLINTLOCK BOBBEJAANBOUD MUSKET BY J.R. CLEMENT CAPE TOWN, CIRCA 1830, no visible serial number, with 45 in. Birmingham proofed barrel fitted with two ramrod pipes, borderline and foliate engraved lock with retailers name 'R. J. CLEMENT / CAPE TOWN', to centre, fitted with roller to frizzen spring, half stocked in walnut the butt with cheek rest and of typical bobbejaanboud (baboons thigh) form a feature almost unique to the Boers of S., Africa, brass butt-plate, the trigger-guard and fore pipe are replacements, originally the musket was full stocked but reduced during working life and two rammer pipes added, no rod and some cracks to forend.

Provenance: R. J. Clement was established at Cape Town circa 1820 to 1852 after which he was succeeded by his son also R. J. Clement who continued the business until 1880. In many cases these interesting and historic pieces of Africana were assembled in S. Africa from parts imported from Birmingham, locks, barrels, furniture etc.
