A SCARCE .44-40 (WIN) 'MODEL 1873' MUSKET or INFANTRY RIFLE, serial no. 346971B,
for 1890, with blued 30in. barrel (some corrosion spotting), the top signed 'WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CT.' over 'KINGS IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29 1866 OCTOBER 16 1860', block and blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, blued slab-sided receiver with side-plates (some light frosting), side loading gate, sliding dust-cover, central hammer, top-tang marked 'MODEL 1873', walnut butt-stock with semi-crescent heel-plate fitted with a central trap, slight deformation to finger lever loop, full-length walnut fore-end with three barrel bands and under-barrel tubular magazine (end retaining screw absent), fitted with factory swivels
Provenance: Of the over 700,000 Winchester 1873 models manufactured, only around 5% were made as muskets as they are commonly known as by collectors
