circa 1890, with octagonal nickel-plated 3in. barrel marked 'METROPOLITAN POLICE' on the top-flat and 'MALTBY, CURTISS & CO. NEW YORK U.S.A.' above 'PAT'D APR 23 78, AUG 28 83 FEB 26 84' on the left side flat, solid frame made to imitate a break-open design with dummy frame catch to back of top-strap and dummy hinge (actually forming a button to release the cylinder arbor) to front of frame, five-shot fluted cylinder, double action mechanism with colour hardened spurred hammer and florally embossed gutta percha grips, much finish remaining
