A 12-BORE TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 10127,
circa 1878, 28 3/4in. black powder only bold damascus barrels (likely a contemporary re-purposed barrel, traces of a four digit serial number, possibly 7722 under 10727), the rib with a starburst at the breech end and 'J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.' address, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 choke in both, carved percussion fences, rebounding back-action island locks with dolphin hammers, best fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, the lockplates signed 'J. PURDEY & SONS', crack to tail of left lockplate, 14 3/8in. figured stock (cracked and repaired at hand), fore-end with Anson push rod release, weight 6lb. 11oz.
