A FINE 28-BORE FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL WITH GILDED MOUNTS, SIGNED VALENTIN MARR, COPENHAGEN, no visible serial number,
circa 1740, with round swamped 11 1/4in. barrel in the white, blind moulded and carved sighting rib, applied brass boat-shaped fore-sight, the breech relief carved with a hunter and dog, engraved solid top-tang with small sighting notches, unlined touch-hole, rounded lockplate with carved borders signed below the pan within a banner 'VALENTIN MARR', chisel engraved pointed tail, applied rounded pan, carved moulded and engraved swan-necked cock, carved frizzen spring with 'A COPPENHAGEN' (sic) signed to the bevel below, walnut full-stock with relief carving forming an apron around the top-tang, further mouldings and relief carving along the ramrod channel and around the ramrod throat, relief chisel carved and engraved gilded mounts including long spurred butt-cap, trigger guard bow and pierced sideplate and horn-tipped ramrod
Provenance: This pistol was originally part of the House of Hannover/Schloss Marienburg collection but was purchased by the vendor before the grand sell-off of 2005
