AN 8-BORE LATE VARIANT 1860 PATENT 'LOCKFAST' SLIDE-AND-TILT SIDELEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 3840,
circa 1870, 33in. black powder only bold damascus barrels, broad rib with diminutive open sights and folding leaf sight, bead fore-sight, the breech end engraved 'PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON' (repurposed from a muzzle loader), Dougall 'Lockfast' patent action, patent no. 1128 of 7th May 1860, rearward facing push down sidelever with ringed finger/thumb grip, carved serpentine fences, action face with protruding bosses, non-rebounding sidelocks with carved low-spurred hammers, bowed triggerguard, grip safety, bold acanthus scroll engraving with beaded and feathered bordering, the lockplates signed 'J. D. DOUGALL', the action flats with 'PATENT LOCKFAST', the underside with 'J. D. DOUGALL'S PATENT LOCKFAST' (heavily rubbed), the triggerguard with traces of a game scene of tiger, 14 5/8in. stock including steel buttplate, fore-end with grip-catch release lever, weight 13lb.
