A SWISS 10.4mm (VETTERLI RIMFIRE) MODEL1867 PEABODY CARBINE, serial number 8276,
circa 1867 and probably cut-back from a rifle, with 23 1/2in. sighted barrel, serial number stamped left side of rear sight, on sight leaf mount and stock behind the trigger-guard, falling block back-action lock, left side of receiver marked 'PEABODY'S PAT / JULY 22, 1862 / MANUF'D BY / PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. / PROV R. I.', walnut butt-stock and cut-down fore-end, lacking clearing-rod.
Provenance: A total of 30,000 Model 1868s were made between 1867 and 1869, when Romania was part of the Ottoman Empire
