JOSEPH MANTON & HENRY NOCK, LONDON
A 10-BORE PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN, serial no. 845,
circa 1780, later conversion to percussion from flint, with octagonal to round 40 1/4in. barrel signed within a gold oval poincon at breech 'H. NOCK, LONDON', the underside of barrel bearing the serial number, London proofs and the maker's mark 'HN', the breech-block also marked on the underside 'H.N. PATENT, screwed plug with platinum vent, fully engraved top-tang (detail rubbed), border and feathered scroll engraved flat lock further inhabited by coiled serpents and signed 'JOSEPH MANTON, PATENT' below a dove-tailed inlet where the original pan was, engraved hammer, chequered walnut half-stock, iron furniture, two barrel-keys without escutcheons and brass mounted mahogany ramrod
Provenance: It is unclear whether this gun was a collaboration between these famous London gun smiths or whether Henry Nock simply re-barrelled or converted the pre-existing Manton piece. Sadly, it has not proved possible to remove the lock to confirm whether the top-edge bears a Manton serial number
